Getting your bearings

Mill Lane

Plenty of places to enjoy a cocktail in the evening with friends, your mum, or on a date night but, don’t be fooled, these places are open until 3am and provide amazing nights out. Expect heels and shirts on the weekends.

The Brewery Quarter

Just off St Mary Street and sometimes overlooked, we love this little square. On game days, the atmosphere and the buzz is incredible. You can get your Nandos or Five Guys fix here and we love dancing and chatting the night away at Brewhouse on a Friday.

Ah, the beautiful bay. We love it so much we’ve done a whole piece about it but, in short, whether you want a wander, bowling trip, date night, comedy night, cinema trip, the bay has everything. It even has a shrine to a fictional Torchwood character…

Not gonna lie, no picture will show of the inherent beauty of Cathays because, ultimately, it looks like a sh*t hole. Nevertheless, it’s brimming with amazing local businesses, independent restaurants and, most importantly, other students. It’s the perfect student hub, lying a short walk from the city centre.

The Hayes

You’ll do most of your shopping here. The giant St Davids 2 is full of your shops and restaurant chains, with enough to blow your student loan within minutes. John Lewis is also here. Both of these have accessible and cheap parking.

Let’s have a look

st mary street

You’ll undoubtedly spend at least one night of your student life stumbling down this street. Laden with clubs, bars, convenience shops and restaurants, it lies just around the corner from Cardiff Central. On match days, there’s nothing like the atmosphere down here.

Want to see where your drunken nights will be? Yep.

Another main street of shopping. Here, amongst others, you’ll find your Topshop, Primark, JD Sports, and Ann Summers. You’ll likely spend a lot of time in the McDonald’s and Burger King when the 3am hunger hits after your nights out on Greyfriars road, which is just around the corner and home to several huge clubs.

Bute Park

Perfectly located in Cardiff, only a tiny walk from Cathays or the shops of the city centre. Have a kick about with your friends in the summer, revise on the grass for a change of scenery from the library, chill by the river to get away from it all or have a couple of ciders and a BBQ – it’s kind of the perfect place for everything.
