A compilation of all the horror movies worth watching, and some worth discarding, if you're looking for a super scary movie marathon.

The unfortunate rule of horror movie night is that most of the time, that creepy looking film will fulfil all your hopes for gore and thrill, or be so horrifically bad, that you’re borderline falling asleep to the sound of shitty special effects. There is no in between.

So if you’ve been put in charge of scary movie night, fancy a lonely Halloween night in, or just fancy a few screams, we’ve got you covered. From the best to the worst, take note of the scary movies to dismiss, and the ones that might just make you pee yourself in in fright.

The Best

Synopsis: on the day their parents die, sisters Lily and Victoria vanish in the woods. Five years later, the girls are found alive in a decaying cabin. As they are reintroduced into normal life, someone still wants to tuck them in at night…

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: for those who favour a good old fashioned ghost story, bristling with suspense, this film should be embraced with open arms

What we have to say: an unexpected crowdpleaser, nothing strikes fear like when motherly instinct is involved

Synopsis: members of a punk rock band and a tough young woman battle murderous white supremacists at a remote Oregon roadhouse

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: a disturbing and chaotic tale of class warfare and cold, calculating evil

What we have to say: more of a ‘get under your skin’ type thriller than a remote horror, but incredibly gripping

3. SAW

Synopsis: a photographer and oncologist regain consciousness while chained to pipes at either end of a bathroom. As the two men realise they’ve been trapped by sadistic serial killer Jigsaw, they struggle to complete his perverse puzzle to live

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: there’s something impressively loathsome and extravagantly twisted about this horror-thriller

What we have to say: arguably unpopular but a thorough classic, with a sinister plot throughout

Synopsis: a young FBI agent must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer, who skins his victims

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: a riveting, non-stop thriller of nerve-wracking intensity

What we have to say: critics physically cannot find fault - from the acting to the eeriness, this film is flawless

Synopsis: an elderly woman battling Alzheimer’s agrees to let a film crew document her condition, but what they discover is far more sinister

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: An unexpectedly solid little horror flick that gets a lot more interesting the longer you give it

What we have to say: at unexpected moments, this film will render you completely terrified, making up for the bad name of footage films

6. VH/S

Synopsis: when a group of misfits are hired by a third party to burglarise a desolate house and a rare VHS tape, they discover more footage than they bargained for

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: spectacular hits and forgivable misses make this a surefire candidate for cult status

What we have to say: this movie will keep you hooked throughout. Every tale different and unexpected

Synopsis: a young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter gone wrong

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: a brilliant concept, tapping the same primitive fears - body horror, burgeoning sexuality - that underpinned the slasher genre

What we have to say: an ideal horror movie for students, there is more fear in the unsaid than what’s actually shown here

Synopsis: a ship sent to investigate an SOS distress call encounters an alien that begins to kill crew members one by one

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: a sci-fi thriller of palpable, nerve-tingling tension with Sigourney Weaver in stunning form

What we have to say: this movie will continue to go down in history with no objection from anyone, downright scary with consistent excitement

The Worst

Synopsis: a spring break turns gory when an underground tremor releases hundreds of prehistoric, carnivorous fish to Lake Victoria

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: fails in being an entertaining satire and even a competent horror film

What we have to say: so much more about the sex and stupid characters than the horror - you’ll have to be really patient to be scared by this movie

Synopsis: after moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: Paranormal Activity boosts some scary moments, but the movie can’t live up to its own hype

What we have to say: the only reason you’ll remain on the edge of your seat is because you can’t believe one whole movie has such little horror to offer

Synopsis: a teenager cheats death after having a premonition of a plane explosion, but Death later takes the lives of those who were meant to die on the plane

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: about as subtle as an amplified death rattle, only not quite as fun to listen to

What we have to say: a winner if you enjoy gore, unlikable characters and predictability, but not much else happens here

Synopsis: a loan officer who evicts an old woman finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: the legitimate pleasing touches of absurdity are not worth the struggle to make it through long stretches of apathetic moviemaking

What we have to say: there are some scary moments in this movie, but the plot is everywhere most of the time, and there isn’t much context for most of the fright

Synopsis: a malevolent entity known as ‘he who walks behind the rows’ entices local children to ritually murder all the adults in town

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: how this movie continues to be so successful and popular after its release still remains a mystery

What we have to say: diehard fans of Stephen King can appreciate this movie but it still struggles with the potential it was given

Synopsis: a year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorised by a new killer who uses horror films as part of a deadly game

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: it appears to be clever, dangerous, witty and fresh but sadly became victim to the movies it mocked

What we have to say: only watch if suffering from extreme boredom, a concept that doesn’t really make sense off paper either

Synopsis: a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces must come together to rescue their youngest daughter after apparitions take her captive

What Rotten Tomatoes has to say: the techno-centric storyline does little to separate it from the last decade of subpar horror

What we have to say: THISISREGARDINGTHE 2015 REMAKE. However, there was absolutely no need for this movie. While not bad, the lack of necessity for this film makes it exhausting to watch
